Drone detection in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom deserves a separate note, and we would rather make it up front than afterwards. Detection through Remote ID works there on the aircraft that broadcast the signal, and because the rules differ there are fewer of those than in the EU.

What detection gives you here

Authority

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)

The United Kingdom no longer follows the EU rules one for one. The CAA operates its own regime, in which broadcasting direct Remote ID is not mandated in the same way as in the EU.

Regulation

Outside the European framework, with its own regime. Read the note below before you buy anything.

  • Many drones sold in the UK do broadcast Remote ID because the manufacturer keeps the model identical worldwide. But that is a manufacturer’s choice rather than a requirement, so it is not an assumption to build on.
  • For a British site we advise a short measurement first: we spend a day looking at what actually broadcasts in your area before you buy anything.
  • What does and does not work without Remote ID is set out in this article.
